Regional Energy and Electricity Supply Project

Investigating renewable energy power generation and storage options for Queensland's Gulf Savannah.

About the Project

The Australian energy market is transitioning as more renewable energy solutions like solar farms and wind turbines come online.

Regional and remote communities (like those in the Gulf Savannah) often rely on diesel generation for energy.  They are subject to the rising costs, associated carbon emissions and security of supply issues that come with diesel.

Mirabou Energy is partnering with Gulf Savannah Development Incorporated to investigate what renewable energy solutions might be suitable for this remote region.

The REESP will review the energy use and future needs of the following Shires:

  • Etheridge
  • Croydon
  • Carpentaria
  • Burke
  • Doomadgee
  • Mornington Island.

Mirabou Energy and Gulf Savannah Development (GSD) have partnered together to investigate the region's future energy needs.

GSD explores projects and initiatives which promote the economic development and sustainability of the Gulf Savannah.

The REESP is funded by the Queensland Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.

The REESP has the following aims:

  • review the region’s economic characteristics, industry trends and investment opportunities to understand current and future energy needs.
  • produce a regional plan setting out how to develop the region’s electricity and energy infrastructure.
  • provide a comprehensive electricity and energy pathway to 2030 for the Gulf Savannah.
  • conduct an electricity and energy supply feasibility study for the Gregory community.

The REESP is due on 30 June 2023.

The REESP will provide a clear energy pathway to 2030 to support the Gulf Savannah region's economic growth and investment options into the future.
